Introducing the DSI 600 Elevator Smoke Containment System®

A cost effective and architecturally pleasing solution to elevator shaft smoke protection. A proven system that meets all code requirements.

Unlike other products on the market, the DSI 600 elevator smoke containment system is also fire rated. The DSI 600 system carries a UL10D one hour or two hour or three hour fire protection curtain system label, UL 1784 smoke migration and S label, California State Fire Marshall listing, and ICC-ESR #4761 AC77 compliant. The DSI 600 system also has OSHPD approval and has Los Angeles City Fire Department acceptance for high rise applications and meets the requirements of IBC 3006.3 Elevator Hoistway Door Protection.

The smooth controlled descent of the DSI 600 elevator shaft smoke protection system works on a gravity fail safe technology that requires no power to close and is fully synchronized with the building’s fire and life safety system.

The DSI 600 elevator smoke containment system by Door Systems®, incorporates a battery back-up feature with an emergency curtain up button located on both sides of the elevator cab.

This insures easy access from either side of the elevator cab in an emergency situation. When the button is depressed the curtain will automatically deploy back down to the closed position until the fire alarm is cleared.

Low profile side guides ensure against movement or blowout during extreme pressures caused by fire conditions. The technologically advanced fire resistive fabric is concealed in a compact overhead housing that takes as little as 7 1/2′ of headroom. It is virtually invisible when in the retracted position.

Why elevator smoke curtains are the better choice

Elevator smoke curtains create a smoke barrier system for buildings that comply with smoke and fire codes. Installing an elevator smoke containment system for smoke and prevention can be done very easily and will eliminate the need for an enclosed elevator lobby. Design wise this returns valuable space for the architect to work with and can be completely hidden.

Features for DSI-600 Elevator Smoke and Fire Curtain:

  • A proven system with over 30 years of manufacturing experience
  • Extremely compact with as little as 7 ½” of headroom required
  • Fail safe design with automatic reset after a fire alarm
  • Battery backup system standard
  • Runs on a 24-volt system for lower electrical installation cost
  • Lightweight design requires no heavy structural support
  • 60-minute fire rating standard with option for 180-minute rating
  • Multiple egress options
  • Vison lite option
  • Unlimited size options available
  • Multiple mounting design options
  • Complies with all relevant local and national codes

Elevator Shaft Pressurization vs Elevator Smoke Curtains

There are basically two methods for smoke containment. Shaft pressurization is achieved via fans pressurizing each of the elevator that mechanically pump the smoke from the building allowing occupants to evacuate. This can be an expensive method of design. Another method would be build a smoke barrier area or method that prevents the smoke from migration and spreading. Primarily, protecting the elevators shafts from upward migration of smoke to the upper floors.

Elevator Smoke Curtain Protection

Buildings with more than three stories are required by the IBC (International Building Code) to be designed with fire and smoke curtain protection systems for all the elevators. Elevators can act like a chimney and allow smoke to seep and quickly spread to other floors. Therefore, per IBC requirements, buildings must be designed with elevator shaft smoke protection either by a lobby or an elevator smoke curtain containment system that protects each elevator shaft. However, the enclosed elevator lobby area can take up lots of prime space and can be challenging to the design process.

DSI Overhead Coiling Smoke Curtain with Vision Lite Option

DSI-600 Vision Lite

The Overhead Coiling Smoke Curtain by Door Systems Model DSI-600 is designed to offer reliable performance in case of a fire. The curtain is hidden inside a compact head-box when not in use, but it is triggered by the Fire Alarm and quickly deploys to contain smoke. The DSI-600 system complies with IBC and NFPA standards and can be used as an alternative to elevator lobbies. Working in tandem with the fire-rated hoistway doors to ensure maximum safety.

ADVANTAGE:

The Vision Lite Panel in our elevator smoke containment system meets and exceeds Section 2.11.6.3 (d) of the ASME A17.1 Elevator Safety Code. When the Overhead Coiling Smoke Curtain is in the closed position, the Vision Lite Panel allows firefighters to visually observe the elevator landing (lobby) when the elevator hoistway door is no more than one-quarter open.
